Lesson 1 - Vowel Sounds

Trinidadian French Creole vowel sounds are divided into two groups:
  1. Non-nasalised vowels - a, é, è, i, o, ou
  2. Nasalised vowels - an, en, on

A is pronounced like the letter <a> in mad, fad, pad, dad, sad. Please say these words out loud:
dada, mama, papa, fafa, tata, gaga



AN is pronounced like the <an> in tanner, rendezvous. Please say these words out loud:
ban, pan, van, tan, gangan


É is pronounced like the sound <ay> as in pay, lay, flay, play. Please say these words out loud:
pété, mété, lélé, hélé, palé


È is pronounced like the sound <eh> as in wet, let, pet, set. Please say these words out loud:
flè, lè, nèt, palèt, lèt


EN is pronounced like the sound <en> as in then, pen, ken, sent. Please say these words out loud:
enmen, nenen, senyen, limen, entèl




I is pronounced like the sound <ee> as in seep, deep, keep, steep. Please say these words out loud:
piwa, pikan, di, piti, tifi.



O is pronounced like the sound <ow> as in low, tow, mow, blow. Please say these words out loud:
poto, moto, foto, toto, koko.




ON is pronounced like the sound <oun> as in French bonbon. Please say these words out loud:
bonbon, tonton, pon, vonvon, sonson.




Ò is pronounced like the sound <oh> as in sore, core, shore, pore, more. Please say these words out loud:
pò, kò, pòpò, dòdò, hòtòtò.




OU is pronounced like the sound <oo> as stoop, coop, poop, boom, booth. Please say these words out loud:
boubou, touloulou, doudou, koukou, sou.
